The International Planned Parenthood Federation took a stand today, releasing what it defines as a "look at the lives of young people, their needs for comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services, their unmet needs and their desires, in a global context that is presenting us with daunting challenges that will shape the future." The 44-page document takes a hard look at the pleasurable and positive aspects of sex of young people worldwide and does not, as many religious and conservative groups are already decrying, serve as a roadmap to sex without responsibility. The report hints that adolescents--some as young as ten--be given a "comprehensive sexuality education" by governments, aid organizations and other groups; and, that young people, ultimately, should be seen as eventual sexual beings.
The right is also taking its own stance and delivering verbiage against the document, indicating that religiously-affiliated organizations, like the Catholic Church (among others), already teach sex education to their youth and parishioners as a means to procreation and the promulgation of family values. Undoubtedly, lay-people from the right will be hell-bent (excuse both puns) on depicting the report in a way that teaches sex not as sacrosanct, but as an un-natural, physiological human need. Go figure. Both viewpoints are already rife with contention. From a fundamental perspective (ha-ha), TheRedLightLounge sees the report as just one way to help solve sexuality issues like HIV/AIDS and STDs.
