Now, I know what you are thinking, but bear with me for just a moment. TheRedLightLounge.com is not a political website or blog and has no intention of being one (or do we? Hmmmm...). However, I was compelled to write a few words about something quite important to the LGBT community from last night’s speech to the American people and maybe more importantly to Congress and Washington as a whole.

Getting beyond the admonishments in the speech of the U.S Senate’s procedural purgatory. The health care debate, numerous policy proposals and giving the Supreme Court a verbal tongue lashing for their recent campaign finance ruling were important elements to be sure.

Something else, quite extraordinary came from the President’s remarks as well. For the first time in U.S history we are within striking distance of the legalization of gay and lesbian Americans to serve openly in the U.S armed forces!! That the President notably spoke of the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” gives you an idea how far we have come in our long struggle for equal rights, both on and off the battlefield. This President gets it!!

So, let us not let up on our struggle for equal rights. From Stonewall to Harvey Milk to “don’t ask, don’t tell” to the California Prop. 8 trial underway we are making steady progress on our march to full equality. Let’s get with it and make it so.
